If you search for a compatibility test before marriage in India, you’ll find three very different things. Each one answers a different question, and many couples use more than one.
1. Kundli matching and guna milan
The traditional method. Ashtakoota guna milan compares two birth charts across eight kootas worth 36 points in all, and flags doshas such as Nadi and Bhakoot. For many families it’s the first step. It answers an astrological question; it doesn’t look at how two people argue, share money or see two careers.
2. Premarital compatibility assessments
Questionnaires that each person completes separately, then compare side by side across areas like communication, conflict, finances, family and expectations. Research on this kind of assessment is encouraging. In one well-known study of 164 couples, answers given before marriage told apart couples who later separated from those who were happily married with up to 81–91% accuracy. That doesn’t mean any test can predict a particular marriage. It means the areas these tests read genuinely matter.
3. Premarital counselling or education
Sessions with a counsellor or a structured course, usually together. A large survey in the US found couples who took part in premarital education had about 31% lower odds of divorce. It takes more time, and it’s most useful when there’s something specific to work through.
Which one do you need?
- If your family wants astrology: a kundli match.
- If you want to understand how you’d actually live together: a compatibility assessment.
- If there’s something you’re struggling to talk about: a counsellor.
What to look for in a compatibility assessment
- Real-life questions, built from everyday situations rather than “rate yourself from 1 to 5”.
- Both people answering separately and honestly.
- Results that explain where you align and differ, not only a percentage.
- Context that fits, including family, parents and living arrangements in an Indian marriage.
- Clear privacy: who sees your answers, and who doesn’t.
Yours Honestly brings these together: a verified profile from 250+ everyday questions, a compatibility report across eight areas with guna milan shown on its own, Ask Honestly to explore your report, and an optional psychologist evaluation.
