How should couples approach living with parents?

In India, you often marry into a household, not just a person. Talk about the home before you share it.

For many couples in India, the first home after marriage is a parent’s home. More than 70% of married women live with one or both parents-in-law right after marriage. For some, that means warmth, shared meals and help when children arrive. For others, it means less privacy and less say. Usually it’s a bit of both, and it goes best when everyone has said out loud what they expect.

Talk about the plan, and the timeline

Is living together permanent, for a few years, or until something changes, such as a new job or a child? A plan with a rough timeline is easier to live with than an open question.

Talk about space

Which room is yours, whether you can close the door, and how guests, phones and late nights are handled. These sound small. They’re the things that wear on people day after day.

Talk about the work of the house

Who cooks, who cleans, and whether the new member of the household is expected to take on more than before. Agree on it as a couple first, then together with the family.

Talk about money

Who pays for what, whether you contribute to the household, and how your own savings stay yours. See money before marriage.

Talk about decisions

Who decides about children’s schooling, holidays, festivals, or a career move? The most important question is the simplest: “When your parents and I see something differently, how will we handle it?”

Talk about careers

Research using national household data has found that, in India, living with a father-in-law is linked with lower employment for married women. If both of you plan to keep working, say so, and talk about what support at home will look like.

If you’re the one whose parents it is

You know the house’s unspoken rules. Your partner doesn’t. Explain them before the wedding, and be the one who speaks up for your partner afterwards.

A Yours Honestly profile reads family as one of eight areas, including where you’ll live, parents’ role in decisions and caring for elders, so a compatibility report can show where you already agree and what deserves a conversation.
